Thanks to the European project “Blonde d’Aquitaine: European Beef Excellence”, in recent years it has been possible to showcase and promote the participation of breeders associated with France Blonde d’Aquitaine Sélection in numerous regional and national cattle shows. These events offer the general public a clear insight into the results of the breeders’ dedication and the value of such shows for the entire sector.
Behind each Blonde d’Aquitaine animal lies a clear vision — shaped by years of experience on the farm, well-considered genetic choices, and the daily observation of animals.
Cattle shows dedicated to the Blonde d’Aquitaine breed are the ideal occasion to make this meticulous work visible, both to the public and among breeders themselves, contributing together to the ongoing improvement of the breed.
But what exactly happens during these events?
Animals selected by breeders are first divided into competition categories (generally based on sex and age group) and then evaluated according to strict criteria by juries made up of breeders, technicians, and industry experts. Many parameters are taken into account during the evaluation, including morphological balance, production traits — such as yield and meat quality — and of course overall appearance: every detail counts.
Winning a competition means gaining technical recognition, enhancing one’s breeding programme, and increasing the farm’s visibility within the supply chain.
Beyond the judging itself, what truly makes these events important is the exchange between breeders.
Each show is an opportunity to engage in dialogue, learn, observe the work of others, and better understand how to orient one’s own work in the years to come. For those who breed Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle in line with the official herdbook standards, participation is less about competition and more about comparison — a way to remain part of a shared journey. This is where experiences intersect, the best animals are chosen to continuously improve the breed, and inspiration is found to refine future selection strategies. It’s not just about competing, but about evolving together within a passionate and expert community.
The next major event will be held in Lezay from 22nd to 24th August, where the highly anticipated national Blonde d’Aquitaine breed show will take place as part of the Festiv’Agri agricultural fair.
While we wait for this exciting event, let’s take a look back at some highlights from previous competitions!
